‘Father of Bossa Nova’ Johnny Alf Died

Brazilian singer-songwriter, pianist and bossa nova pioneer Johnny Alf died in Santo André, Brazil, on March 4. The cause of death was prostate cancer, according to his manager Nelson Valencia. He was 80.

While unknown to many outside of his home country, Alf is highly regarded by the Brazilian music world. Writer Ruy Castro, who penned numerous books on Brazilian popular music, even dubbed Alf as “the true father of the bossa nova.”

“[Alf] opened the doors for us with his way of playing piano, with its jazz influence,” guitarist and composer Carlos Lyra told the New York Times. “When my generation arrived he had already planted the seeds.” Full Story at Spinner
